Methadone Group Therapy
Methadone Maintenance Programs

Methadone has been proven safe and effective, but it should be supplemented with individual counseling, group therapy, transitional living arrangements and support groups like Narcotics Anonymous.

Many methadone clinics offer individual counseling and group therapy to help ensure a full and lasting recovery. Because underlying emotional and psychological issues are often causes of substance abuse, individual and/or group counseling aid in long-term sobriety.

  • Individual counseling helps patients address confidential or sensitive issues in a private setting.
  • Group therapy provides a support network that allows patients to receive peer support, feedback and advice from others going through similar experiences.
  • Transitional living environments, also referred to as "sober living," offer support, weekly NA meetings, random drug testing and assistance with finding employment or returning to school.
  • Self-help groups like Narcotics Anonymous (NA) have proven to be an effective supplement to methadone treatment.  The 12 Steps help patients engage in a thorough self-examination, connect with a higher power and make amends for harm done to others.

Methadone can limit drug cravings and withdrawal symptoms, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. Patients need to address the social, professional, emotional and physical damage caused by opiate addiction as well.
